Mark & Sue talk to Paul Caliver about the BIG OPEN MIC – Flinders Ranges Music Festival.

The Flinders Ranges BIG OPEN MIC is an event to highlight the region and the beautiful flinders ranges, to have an attraction (event) to bring people to the flinders to see it for themselves and to support the outback communities.

It is an event for everyone young and old, locals or anyone else from anywhere.

The organisers of the Flinders Ranges BIG OPEN MIC have created the event along with the musicians to bring some positivity & cheer to the town of Hawker & region.  After all the negativity that has surrounded the Federal Governments plan to build a Nuclear waste facility near Hawker at Barndioota, causing a divide between friends, family and citizens of the township and region. The musicians will be bringing greats sounds & styles to have some great fun & offer some waste dump relief.

The organisers are hoping to bring an event model that will be popular, economically viable and sustainable to develop into the future.

They are in the belief that an event of this kind can be a draw card to the town and region. It would bring to the area more people and extra capital and another reason to visit the Flinders Ranges.

The organisers know that some spending on infrastructure in the Flinders region on top of what is already there along with other events and the tourism season, it would be far better off socially, culturally, environmentally and economically to the local people, region and state.

The town and region would be far better off developing tourism than having the Nuclear Waste Dump.

The beautiful Flinders Ranges is an eco adventure, cultural tourism destination that could rival Uluru & Kakadu visitation numbers with the right planning, investment & marketing.

With the Flinders Ranges & South Australia’s other eco assets; Kangaroo Island, Eyre Peninsula, the Coorong, etc. Eco tourism will bring in collectively a huge CLEAN sustainable economic contribution to the regions & South Australia in a growing global eco tourism market.

With other developed exciting tourism regions like the Barossa & Clare Valleys, Coonawarra, Eyre Peninsular locations, with the festivals, activities & adventures to be had in South Australia. Tourism diversity will bring a whole lot of economic business to South Australia and its regions.

Should the Federal Government jeopardise our State assets and the on going investments & developments in a clean sustainable economic future?

We believe the waste dump doesn’t make sense, it doesn’t belong.

Governor Hindmarsh Hotel

59 Port Road, Hindmarsh SA 5007

MOSS is a five-piece rock band that pumps it out with songs of social and political conscience.  “Modern day griots” with a sound that gives a “hat tip to the seventies”. With decades of experience, you’ll hear the road in their music delivering something very unique in today’s contemporary music scene.  Unapologetically a square peg in a round hole.  Imagine;  “Midnight Oil meets the Aztecs at Sunbury”

EVENT LINK: The GOV Gig Guide

Named after the first governor of South Australia, The Gov has seen a lot of changes over the past 162 years.
Since 1993, when the Tonkin family took over, The Gov has established itself as Adelaide’s leading live music venue and is highly regarded by musicians and music-lovers alike.
Between the regular local bands playing in the front bar and the world-class musicians featured in the Venue, The Gov really is Adelaide’s home of live, original music.

The Gov’s Front Bar and Saloon Bar provide a friendly environment for activities like the Adelaide Ukulele Appreciation Society meetings on Tuesdays, Open Mic Sessions on Wednesdays, Irish Jam Sessions on Fridays and live local bands on Thursdays and Saturdays.

The warm décor, polished wooden surfaces and fireplaces throughout make it a comfortable and welcoming place to be, especially in winter. In the Venue, pictures of famous musicians adorn the walls and the dimmed lighting booths around the room emphasises the intimate space, creating the perfect environment in which to see a favourite band.

Best Entertainment Venue in Australia

At the 2009 and 2012 Australian Hotels Association’s national Awards for Excellence, The Gov was awarded the title of ‘Best Entertainment Venue in Australia’. The Gov has also won the AHA Award for Excellence as the ‘Best Entertainment Venue in South Australia’ for the last six years, a streak which started in 2007. We were also inducted into the SA AHA Hall of Fame in 2011 as the ‘Best Entertainment Venue’.

Regarded amongst musicians as the key home of live music in Adelaide, The Gov benefits from the continued support of many artists who come back year after year, at times to play multiple nights in one visit.

MOSS DUO: for “RISE UP”

MOSS DUO – Sue and Mark are looking forward to performing for RISE UP.  Rise Up is addressing  the sombre issue of domestic and family violence and its huge ongoing effects on people and our community as a whole so reflective in that sense.

Rise Up as a call and recognition of our actions and empowerment to change that situation so some celebration of that action being taken and the positive effect it can have for particularly those affected.
